Discussion about area aqueduct scheduled for Feb. 11 at Olive Free Library

WEST SHOKAN >> Diane Galusha, author of Liquid Assets: A History of New York City’s Water System, will speak at 11 a.m. on Feb. 11 at the Olive Free Library, 4033 Route 28A, West Shokan.

Her talk, “The Catskill Aqueduct: A Century of Service” will offer an illustrated of the 92-mile underground aqueduct which carries the combined waters of the Schoharie and Ashokan reservoirs, from the Catskill Mountains to New York City.

The aqueduct system was completed in 1917, at a cost $162 million and the loss of 283 lives.

Galusha will look at the brains and brawn behind the construction of the system, which is today still considered an engineering feet, as well as how the Catskill Aqueduct has fared over a century of continuous service.
