Get ready. It’s coming.

As of Feb. 11, everyone in Oswego County will have to dial 10 numbers when making a phone call. That’s 10 numbers for local calls, somewhat nearby calls or calls anywhere in the 315 area code region. So if you used to call your buddy at 123-4567, you would have to dial 315-123-4567 as of Feb. 11.

After Feb. 11, local calls placed using just the seven digits will not be completed and a recording will instruct the caller to hang up and dial again.

This change in dialing is due to a new area code being started in the 315 area. In what the state Public Service Commission calls an “overlay,” the area code 680 will be laid on top of the same area that now is covered by the 315 area code.

As of March 11, new phone numbers that are assigned in this region— including Oswego County — will have 680 area codes.

Three-digit calls such as 911 for emergencies, 711 for telecommunications for the deaf, 811 to report digging, 411 for directory assistance and 211 for helpful information will still be allowed after Feb. 11.

The new area code for this region was needed because the 315 code is running out of available telephone numbers. The assigned area code 680 will overlay the same area served by 315.

If you have any questions about the 315/680 area code overlay, contact Verizon at (800) 922-0204.
