Lighting up Oneida, holiday lights competition

Oneida >> It starts with a box full of tangled cords, blown lights, and an empty staple gun.

The end product is a twinkling display of Christmas spirit, and this year, a chance to win some prize money and neighborhood pride.

The City of Oneida is holding an inaugural Christmas light decoration competition for residents, a contest akin to the city wide scarecrow contest held earlier this year. Mayor Leo Matzke says the intent of the contests is to help raise community spirit.

Contest judging for the Christmas light displays will take place on Saturday, Dec. 19. In order to register for the event, residents must submit their name, address, and phone number to the city clerk’s office by 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 16. Similarly, contestants can register their decorations on the mayor’s Facebook page “Leo Matzke, Mayor of Oneida.”

Winners will be chosen for the following categories:

• Most traditional

• Most whimsical

• Best use of color

• Mayor’s choice

Each category will have first and second place awards.
