Emergency personnel conduct mass casualty drill at Rhinebeck High

Local emergency personnel are learning the skills needed in the event of a mass casualty.

The Rhinebeck Fire Department along with mutual aid response from Rhinecliff, Hillside, Pine Plains, Red Hook, Milan and Tivoli fire and rescue squads, and some 50 volunteer EMS and firefighter personnel, conducted a mass casualty exercise at Rhinebeck High School Nov. 6, according to a written release.

The exercise simulated an intruder had shot and wounded numerous students prior to the scene being secured by police. The exercise began once the scene was secured and EMS and fire personnel entered the building to search, locate, triage patients and remove them to an outside safe area for additional treatment and transport to local medical facilities.

The exercise was conducted to test the response to such an incident. Participants learned and improved on initial medical evaluation and treatment, according to the release, scene management and coordination, radio communications and patient transportation. They also practiced on-scene lifesaving medical stabilization that is required to sustain life until patients get to the hospital.
