ENDICOTT, NY (WBNG) — It started in 1917 with just $26.50. Sunday, it celebrated its 100 year anniversary- with nearly one billion dollars to its name.

The local Rotary Foundation collects money to improve world health, alleviate poverty, and grant scholarships. Many exchange students were on-hand to celebrate during Sunday’s ceremony.

“We’re doing great work,” said Rotary International President John Germ. “We’re providing clean water. We’re providing education. We’re providing health care, we’re providing literacy programs. We’re providing scholarships for individuals who want to study peace and conflict resolution and then agree to go to work in those fields.”

The foundation’s current mission is to eradicate polio.
