BINGHAMTON (WBNG) — Before the Binghamton Senators took the ice against the Springfield Thunderbirds Saturday night, a war veteran dropped the puck at the Floyd. L Maines Veterans Memorial Arena in downtown Binghamton.

The crowd cheered on war veteran Albert Rood as he made his way down a red carpet and onto the ice.

Rood served in the 1945 Battle of Iwo Jima.

“Things like this are great for our veterans and I think that people are becoming more aware of veterans today and that’s great, it makes me feel good,” said Rood.

Rood also shared with 12 news that originally he didn’t want to step on the ice, but he’s glad he made the choice to do so and is thankful to have been honored.
