Man seriously injured in collision with train

BURNS — A man was seriously injured in a vehicle collision with a train Thursday afternoon.

The unidentified driver’s vehicle was southbound at approximately 2:30 p.m. on Route 15B when it travelled through the crossing barriers to the train tracks and was struck by the Norfolk Southern train, Amity-based state police said in a press release.

The man suffered “serious physical injuries,” police said. He was taken to Nicholas H. Noyes Memorial Hospital, Dansville, for treatment and transferred to Strong Memorial Hospital, Rochester, by Thursday evening, according to a Noyes spokesperson.

No further information on the driver’s status was available by press time.

Following the collision, Route 15B was closed for several hours from Route 70 to Route 15A. The train sustained minimal damage.

The Bureau of Criminal Investigation along with state police are investigating the incident and released no further information Thursday evening.

Canaseraga ambulance and fire crews, the Birdsall Fire Department and ALS units from Dansville and Scio also responded to the scene, according to an Allegany County emergency dispatcher.
