UPDATE: New information in Mother’s Day fatal accident
(WBNG)– Deputies say a man was driving on the wrong side of the road when he caused a fatal accident on Mother’s Day. The crash killed 4-year-old Samrya Oakley.
According to the Broome County Sheriff’s Office, 32 year-old Thomas Steyer, of Binghamton, was driving a Cadillac Escalade in the wrong lane of East Maine Road on May 8. Law enforcement say it is not yet known why he was on the wrong side of the road.
A Toyota Camry, operated by 17 year-old Jontay Card, of Binghamton, was traveling on the correct side of East Maine Road in the opposite direction, according to authorities.
Deputies say Card attempted to avoid the Escalade, but the SUV struck the rear passenger side of the Camry.
Steyer was deemed at fault. He was issued 11 traffic tickets — including reckless driving, failure to keep right, and speeding.
No criminal charges have been filed at this time.
