UAlbany lacrosse holds off UMBC in overtime

The University at Albany men’s lacrosse team clinched its fourth consecutive undefeated America East Conference regular season, nipping Maryland-Baltimore County, 15-14, in overtime on Saturday in Baltimore.

Kyle McClancy scored the game-winner with just 15 seconds remaining in overtime to lift the Great Danes to 6-0 in the America East and 12-2 overall.

“I was trying to do a five dodge from the corner; we do it all the time in practice,” McClancy said. “I was trying to beat my man, draw a slide and move the ball, and just finish in front of the net.”

The Great Danes are the first America East team to go unbeaten in conference play four straight seasons since Hofstra did it from 1995-1998.

“Give (UMBC) a ton of credit for sticking with their gameplan and playing really hard in the second half,” UAlbany coach Scott Marr said. “But I’m proud of my team for being able to get into overtime and getting a ‘W.'”

Seth Oakes scored six goals and Connor Fields had three goals and three assists for UAlbany, which will open the America East Tournament at 7 p.m. Thursday at Casey Stadium.

Nate Lewnes scored 10 goals in the game to set a program record for the Retrievers, who dropped to 4-10 and 1-5 in conference action.
