BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB)- Thousands of Western New Yorkers gathered at Canalside Saturday to show support for those battling multiple sclerosis.

The mission of Walk MS is to step toward a cure for multiple sclerosis, an often disabling disease of the central nervous system. Western New York has one of the highest rates of MS in the country. The walk raises money for the research and patient programs of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Many of the people walking this morning know first-hand how important this is.

“It’s really tough to live with,” said Phil Wiza, who has MS. “It changes a whole lot of things of what you can and can’t do. With me, it caused me to end up retiring early and it really wears you down.”

Eboni Hayes also has MS. She said, “It’s very important for me to be here to show that I am able to walk and I’m able to do things so all is not hopeless, and to also show my support for others living with MS as well.”

News 4 has been a proud sponsor of Walk MS for almost 30 years and News 4 anchor Jacquie Walker has volunteered every year. She has seen great strides made in M.S. research, some of it pioneered right here in Western New York.
