April 30 marked National Muslim Soup Kitchen Day with eight community sites throughout the Capital Region serving free meals to those in need.

Aliya Saeed, a physician who has volunteered in the soup kitchen at City Mission in Schenectady for the past two years, said serving the community at the mission is a duty and privilege.

“Serving food to people who are in need is a core tenet of the Muslim faith,” she said.
