Vassar lecture April 4 focuses on affordability of 'sustainable' cities

POUGHKEEPSIE >> Sociologist Miriam Greenberg will examine how many of the world’s “most sustainable” cities are also among the most unaffordable and unequal at a free lecture Monday, April 4, at Vassar College.

“Beyond Ecotopia: Green Displacement and the Challenge of Equity in the Sustainable City” will begin at 6 p.m. in Room 200 of Rockefeller Hall. The talk will draw on examples from research in New York City and New Orleans, but focus on the case of the San Francisco Bay Area’s “ecotopia” celebrated for its progressive and innovative sustainability policy, planning, and design, yet currently ranked the most unaffordable and unequal city region in the United States.

Greenberg is associate professor of sociology at the University of California Santa Cruz. She holds a doctorate from the City University of New York Graduate Center.
